SBU cyber specialists jointly with the National Agency for Combating Terrorism, Extremism and Cybercrime of the Czech Police eliminated a scheme of stealing electronic accounts of EU citizens.
As a result of joint actions, SBU detained 4 fraudsters in Zakarpattia region who used virus programs to steal cryptocurrency and bank accounts of foreign citizens.
To find customers, the offenders set up an underground call center in Uzhhorod, involving at least 70 operators aged 19 to 27.
"Following instructions," they called foreigners, introduced themselves as investment consultants, and persuaded them to invest in "promising" crypto projects.
At the same time, IT specialists who were part of the call center created online ads advertising fake investment platforms.
In both cases, the fraudsters offered their victims to register in an electronic account, which allowed the attackers to hack into the "clients'" devices.
The offenders then accessed the users' cryptocurrency wallets and banking applications and transferred the stolen funds to their own accounts.
In this way, the fraudsters seized at least UAH 2 million in the hryvnia equivalent.
During the searches of the call center premises and the suspects' residences, the SBU seized mobile phones and computer equipment with evidence of the crimes.
At present, 4 organizers of the scheme were served a notice of suspicion under Part 5 of Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (fraud on a large scale).
The offenders are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. Investigative actions are ongoing to bring all participants in the fraud to criminal responsibility.
The investigation was conducted by SBU officers in Zakarpattia region under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office.

Then the traitor received a task: to study the mood of the local population and obtain such information:

◾ what military equipment and weapons can be purchased on the black market in Zakarpattia;
◾ what is the situation with the migration of the Hungarian population in the region;
◾ what military forces are stationed in Zakarpattia, whether there are many vehicles and combat vehicles;
◾ how well the law enforcement agencies are staffed and what their numbers are, etc.
It is documented that after that, the agent personally reconnoitered the deployment of the Defense Forces and the coordinates of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems in the region.
After gathering intelligence, he traveled to Hungary to report to his supervisor. To cross the border, the traitor issued a certificate of caretaker for his sick father, who needed treatment in foreign institutions.
According to the case file, during the meeting, the Hungarian intelligence officer handed over cash to the agent, which was to be used for the fulfillment of the assigned tasks. By forming an agent network, foreign intelligence hoped to expand the range of information gathering, including obtaining data from the frontline and frontline regions.
In March of this year, SBU CI documented the second meeting between the agent and the curator. This time, he received a phone with special software for covert communication.
Among the new tasks of the traitor was to identify official cars belonging to representatives of the Security and Defense Forces in Zakarpattia region.
