SBU prevents terrorist attack in Zaporizzhya, which was to take place on the Day of the Security Service of Ukraine
The SBU prevented a cunning terrorist attack, which Russian military intelligence (better known as a game) was preparing in Zaporizzhya, a frontline city.
The special operation resulted in the detention of a Russian agent couple who were preparing to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) near a local military unit on March 25 this year - the anniversary of the SBU.
According to the SBU CI, on that day, the occupants planned to remotely detonate the explosive together with their agents near the checkpoint of the defense facility.
The SBU exposed both agents in advance and detained them on the point of equipping the IED with additional destructive elements.
The detention took place in a private building located opposite the main entrance to the military unit. The defendants rented the building as an observation post for the target.
To do this, they installed a hidden webcam on the window of the house and equipped it with remote access for Russian special services.
According to the investigation, the defendants are two cohabitants, a boy and a girl aged 18 and 19, who came to the attention of the Russian game while looking for "easy money" in Telegram channels.
During the search, components for making IEDs, a video camera and mobile phones with evidence of the crime were seized from them.
SBU investigators have served the detainees a notice of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
◾ Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 111 (high treason committed under martial law by a group of persons by prior conspiracy)
◾ Art. 14(1), Art. 258(2) (preparation to commit a terrorist act).
The offenders are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Office in Zaporizzhya region under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor's Office.
